It’s the poor who are greedy, NOT the rich.

What?!?

I hear from people who are dissatisfied about their financial situation a lot. What do they say is the cause?

Rich people.

Guess what? If you want to blame anyone, start blaming yourself for your situation.

Ask yourself, “What have you done today to improve your situation?”

What course are you taking? What book are you reading? What business are you starting?

Most people they tell me that the rich are greedy and hoard all the money, leaving the “rest of us” to suffer. They claim that they themselves don’t care about money, not like those greedy, money-hungry rich folks.

But I ask them, what does that not caring look like? Struggling with bills every month, just getting by, with nothing left over for fun, or education, or for giving to those less fortunate.

In fact, they need help themselves, so how can they help others?

In my experience, a lot of poor people are more “greedy” than rich people.

Many poor people insist that:

– The rich should pay all the taxes

– The government should take care of them

– They deserve a higher salary for doing the bare minimum at work

– Wealth should be “redistributed” (meaning THEY get money that someone else earned).

Poor people criticize the rich for being “privileged.”

Well, I would go so far as to criticize anyone who feels that way as being “entitled!”

So much of the media fans the flames. Painting rich people as villains. As if being smart, hardworking and successful were some kind of a crime.

No wonder so many people say they don’t care about money, and they’ll argue with anyone who points out this truth: Those “mean” rich people they hate so much are some of the most generous people around.

Take Bill Gates.

Yes, he’s the wealthiest man in the world, so he has more to give. But get this, according to “Wealth-X”, a wealth research firm, Mr. Gates has donated 32% of his $82.4 billion net worth so far. That’s $27 Billion.

If the average “non-rich” household income is roughly $76,000/year, 32% donated over a 30-year career would be $729,600.

(How many “non-rich” people do you know who would give that much?)

Bill Gates is not alone. Most ultra-wealthy people I know give away more money every year than most people will ever earn in their lifetimes.

My experience is that they are all actively LOOKING for ways to give back.

To them, the biggest luxury of being rich isn’t owning a yacht or an island… it’s having the capacity to make a real difference in the world.

Contrast that with people who are always simply looking for a handout.

So, who’s “greedy” now?

For those who want to keep blaming others for why they’re not where they want to be, I’m not here to change their minds.

For anyone who believes that the world owes them a living, they’re not welcome in my world.

But I am here to help people who want to accept responsibility for their life and for making it better!

Most likely you have not been loved or hated as much as Donald Trump has but… (he’s a funny fella…)

24 hours.  That’s how much each one of us have each day at our disposal.

You. Me. Donald Trump. Everyone. Time is the great equalizer.

So how come some people get a lot of things done in a day, while others can’t do one single thing? We all have the same hours in a day, so it can’t be the “lack of time”.

The biggest difference between the successful and the poor is how they spend their free time. 

It’s what we DO with our time, the way we organize our time, is what counts and makes the difference.

I know that “not enough time” is something that we’ve all said at one point in our lives.

You have 24 hours at your disposal. 

Let’s say you sleep/rest 8 hours per day. You’re left with 16 hours.

And let’s say you have a full-time 9-5 job. And you work for 8 hours there, plus 2 hours to commute to and from work. You’re left with 6 hours.

And let’s assume that you have a family and you want to spend some time with them. Take 2-3 hours for that.

And now you’re left with 3-4 hours.

You can watch reruns of Seinfeld. You can watch sports. Or you can actually work on your side business.

It’s your choice.

How you spend your free times determines your success in life. 

A lot of people have built a stable 5 and 6-figure businesses with only a couple hours a day. Which still leaves you 1-2 hours of TV/Relaxation time at night, or 1 hour relaxation and 1 hour to work out!

Do you have other responsibilities, and you have only an hour or two per day? OK, start with that.  You’ll find very quickly that you can get a lot done in that time. When you annualise that time it is 730 hours per year. That’s a lot of time from just 2 hours a day.

Just imagine what you can do with 730 hours concentrating on a new business venture… WOW!!!

The key to more time is systemization, preparation, and automation.

Scam… It’s a funny word.

The word scam has negative connotations right from the start, and whenever a person or businesses name is mentioned in the same sentence, they are guilty until proven innocent.

    Now, this is all open to opinions of the individuals involved.  In the ten years we have been with Prosperity of Life,  Chrissy and I  have heard it all.

What we have found over the decades we have been operating is, from the small amount  of the negative scam google gossip that is out there, they all have one agenda. (And that is ALL, not some).

They are all pushing there own business opportunity or scheme or scam of some sort, or whatever it is, by using successful businesses as their vehicle. They all prey on successful businesses like Prosperity of Life, because of the magnetic attraction that anything negative has. Most of which is fiction, opinions or assumptions. Just look at any news program. 90% of the program is negative because that sells more advertising time. People seem to be attracted to the negative while positive gets a back seat. Very odd indeed.

Some actually believe they are ‘saving the world’ by putting their opinion and assumptions in writing. (sarcasm… wow! aren’t we lucky you are wiser than the rest… we’re saved!)

What is that saying?….

We all remember the game we played at school called Chinese Whispers.

You start of with 30 kids with a story, and it is passed on down the line. By the time the story gets to the last person it is completely different to when it started.

No similarities at all.

This is exactly what most of google gossip is. Chinese Whispers.

These ‘anti-scam artists’ sites are just selling advertising on their sites and making a killing, at the expense of great legitimate businesses. Not so much monetary expense but reputation expense. But also lost opportunity expense to the people inquiring about the business opportunity.

Most people see right through this negative scam garbage, and they are the ones who do really well in Prosperity of Life. The people who still believe in the google gossip will always be at the effect of the masses or part of the herd, so from that, they would never go past our interview process, or even get close to it.

Our former bank even used google gossip as their tool to close our accounts…. how bazaar…and very unprofessional. We now have a smarter bank.

When it comes down to finding the facts about a business opportunity like Prosperity of Life, go straight to the source and get the real info.

Don’t get sucked into the negative void because that will destroy an otherwise great opportunity for you.

We have been successfully operating and growing for decades. And for a business to do that we must be doing things correctly.

We are all fairly intelligent people. Do your own due diligence and work out for yourself what is fact, and what is fiction. Don’t procrastinate as time is tickin’.

The Best Ways to Beat Procrastination.

Perseverance is about as important to achievement as gasoline is to driving a car. Sure, there will be times when you feel like you’re spinning your wheels, but you’ll always get out of the rut with genuine perseverance. Without it, you won’t even be able to start your engine. Procrastination will stop you from picking up you keys.

The opposite of perseverance is procrastination. Perseverance means you never quit. Procrastination usually means you never get started, although the inability to finish something is also a form of procrastination.

Ask people why they procrastinate and you’ll often hear something like this: “I’m a perfectionist. Everything has to be just right before I can get down to work. No distractions; not too much noise; and of course I have to be feeling well physically, too. I can’t work when I have a headache.” The other end of procrastination—being unable to finish—also has a perfectionist explanation: “I’m just never satisfied; I’m my own harshest critic; if all the i’s aren’t dotted and all the t’s aren’t crossed, I just can’t consider that I’m done. That’s just the way I am, and I’ll probably never change.”

Do you see what’s going on here? A fault is being turned into a virtue. The perfectionist is saying their standards are just too high for this world. This fault-into-virtue syndrome is a common defense when people are called upon to discuss their weaknesses, but in the end it’s just a very pious kind of excuse-making. It certainly doesn’t have anything to do with what’s really behind procrastination.

Remember, the basis of procrastination could be fear of failure. That’s what perfectionism really is, once you take a hard look at it. What’s the difference between being afraid of being less-than-perfect or afraid of anything else? You’re still paralyzed by fear. What’s the difference between never starting or never finishing? You’re still stuck. You’re still going nowhere. You’re still overwhelmed by whatever task is before you. You’re still allowing yourself to be dominated by a negative vision of the future in which you see yourself being criticized, laughed at or punished. This negative vision of the future is really a mechanism that allows you to do nothing. It’s a very convenient mental tool.

I’m going to tell you how to beat procrastination. I’m going to show you how to turn procrastination into perseverance, and if you do what I suggest, the process will be virtually painless. It involves using two very powerful principles that foster productivity and perseverance instead of passivity and procrastination.

Break it down.

No matter what you’re trying to accomplish, whether it’s writing a book, climbing a mountain or painting a house, the key to achievement is your ability to break down the task into manageable pieces and knock them off one at one time. Focus on accomplishing what’s right in front of you at this moment. Ignore what’s off in the distance someplace. Substitute real-time positive thinking for negative future visualization.

Suppose I ask you if you could write a 400-page novel. Sounds impossible, right? But suppose I ask you a different question. Suppose I ask if you can write a page and a quarter a day for one year. Do you think you could do it? Now the task is starting to seem more manageable. We’re breaking down the 400-page book into bite-size pieces. Even so, I suspect many people would still find the prospect intimidating. Do you know why? Writing a page and a quarter may not seem so bad, but you’re being asked to look ahead one whole year. When people start to look that far ahead, many of them automatically go into a negative mode. So let me formulate the idea of writing a book in yet another way. Let me break it down even more.

Suppose I ask you if you can fill up a page and a quarter with words—not for a year, not for a month, not even for a week, but just today? Don’t look any further ahead than that. I believe most people would confidently declare that they could accomplish that. These are the same people who feel totally incapable of writing a whole book.

If I said the same thing to those people tomorrow—if I told them, I don’t want you to look back, and I don’t want you to look ahead, I just want you to fill up a page and a quarter this very day—do you think they could do it?

One day at a time. We’ve all heard that phrase. That’s what we’re doing here. We’re breaking down the time required for a major task into one-day segments, and we’re breaking down the work involved in writing a 400-page book into page-and-a-quarter increments.

Keep this up for one year, and you’ll write the book. Discipline yourself to look neither forward nor backward and you can accomplish things you never thought you could possibly do. And it all begins with those three words: Break it down.

Write it down.

We know how important writing is to goal-setting. The writing you’ll do for beating procrastination is very similar. Instead of focusing on the future, you’re going to be writing about the present just as you experience it every day. Instead of describing the things you want to do or the places you want to go, you’re going to describe what you actually do with your time, and you’re going to keep a written record of the places you actually go.

In other words, you’re going to keep a diary of your activities. And you’re going to be amazed by the distractions, detours and downright wastes of time you engage in during the course of a day. All of these get in the way of achieving your goals. For many people, it’s almost like they planned it that way, and maybe at some unconscious level they did. The great thing about keeping a time diary is that it brings all this out in the open. It forces you to see what you’re actually doing—and what you’re not doing.

Your time diary doesn’t have to be anything elaborate. Just buy a little spiral notebook that you can easily carry in your pocket.  When you go to lunch, when you drive across town, when you go to the dry cleaners, when you spend some time shooting the breeze at the copying machine, make a quick note of the time you began the activity and the time it ends. Try to make this notation as soon as possible; if it’s inconvenient to do it immediately, you can do it later. But you should make an entry in your time diary at least once every 30 minutes, and you should keep this up for at least a week.

Break it down. Write it down. These two techniques are very straightforward. But don’t let that fool you: These are powerful and effective productivity techniques. This is how you beat procrastination. This is how you get yourself started.

We all make mistakes but the people who thrive from their mistakes are the successful ones.

“Never go back.” What does that mean? From observations of successful people, clinical psychologist and author of Never Go Back: 10 Things You’ll Never Do Again (Howard Books, June 2014), Dr. Henry Cloud has discovered certain “awakenings” that people have—in life and in business—that once they have them, they never go back to the old way of doing things. And when that happens, they are never the same. In short, they got it.

“Years ago, a bad business decision of mine led to an interesting discussion with my mentor,” Dr. Cloud says. “I had learned a valuable lesson the hard way, and he reassured me: ‘The good thing is once you learn that lesson, you never go back. It’s one thing you will never do again.’

“I wondered, what are the key awakenings that successful people go through that forever change how they do things, which propel them to succeed in business, relationships, and life? I began to study these awakenings, researching them over the years.”

Although life and business have many lessons to teach us, Dr. Cloud observed 10 “doorways” of learning that high performers go through, never to return again.

Successful people never again…

1. Return to what hasn’t worked.

Whether a job, or a broken relationship that was ended for a good reason, we should never go back to the same thing, expecting different results, without something being different.

2. Do anything that requires them to be someone they are not.

In everything we do, we have to ask ourselves, “Why am I doing this? Am I suited for it? Does it fit me? Is it sustainable?” If the answer is no to any of these questions, you better have a very good reason to proceed.

3. Try to change another person.

When you realize that you cannot force someone into doing something, you give him or her freedom and allow them to experience the consequences. In doing so, you find your own freedom as well. My experience has told me to never do again.

4. Believe they can please everyone.

Once you get that it truly is impossible to please everyone, you begin to live purposefully, trying to please the right people.

5. Choose short-term comfort over long-term benefit.

Once successful people know they want something that requires a painful, time-limited step, they do not mind the painful step because it gets them to a long-term benefit. Living out this principle is one of the most fundamental differences between successful and unsuccessful people, both personally and professionally.

6. Trust someone or something that appears flawless.

It’s natural for us to be drawn to things and people that appear “incredible.” We love excellence and should always be looking for it. We should pursue people who are great at what they do, employees who are high performers, dates who are exceptional people, friends who have stellar character, and companies that excel. But when someone or something looks too good to be true, he, she, or it is. The world is imperfect. Period. No one and no thing is without flaw, and if they appear that way, hit pause.

7. Take their eyes off the big picture.

We function better emotionally and perform better in our lives when we can see the big picture. For successful people, no one event is ever the whole story. Winners remember that – each and every day.

8. Neglect to do due diligence.

No matter how good something looks on the outside, it is only by taking a deeper, diligent, and honest look that we will find out what we truly need to know: the reality that we owe ourselves.

9. Fail to ask why they are where they find themselves.

One of the biggest differences between successful people and others is that in love and in life, in relationships and in business, successful people always ask themselves, what part am I playing in this situation? Said another way, they do not see themselves only as victims, even when they are.

10. Forget that their inner life determines their outer success.

This is one thing for sure I will never do again.

The good life sometimes has little to do with outside circumstances. We are happy and fulfilled mostly by who we are on the inside. Research validates that. And our internal lives largely contribute to producing many of our external circumstances.

And, the converse is true: people who are still trying to find success in various areas of life can almost always point to one or more of these patterns as a reason they are repeating the same mistakes.

Everyone makes mistakes…even the most successful people out there. But, what achievers do better than others is recognize the patterns that are causing those mistakes and never repeat them again. In short, they learn from pain—their own and the pain of others.

A good thing to remember is this: pain is unavoidable, but repeating the same pain twice, when we could choose to learn and do something different, is certainly avoidable. I like to say, “we don’t need new ways to fail….the old ones are working just fine!” Our task, in business and in life, is to observe what they are, and never go back to doing them again.

Lets displace the top 10 myths. It’s tempting to think that running a home-based business involves a few hours on the computer in the morning, a nice leisurely lunch, maybe a phone call or two in the afternoon before an early finish.
However, if your business is to be anything other than a mildly diverting sideline, you will have to put in the work.
“When you’re by yourself, you do everything – bookkeeping, marketing, sales, the lot,” says Christine Greig, who runs BestEverHomeBusiness.com from home and has done for 7 years.
“All of this takes a lot of time and people underestimate this. They often take things on as a hobby and then find it is very popular and organically grows. They don’t think long-term.”
Set a strategy for your business early on, have an in-depth business plan. And consider outsourcing – it’ll save you time.

2. You can sit back and get rich quickly.

Despite what the endless ads tell you, there aren’t any jobs that will earn you big bucks just by staying at home making the odd phone call.
You look at the content behind those stupid Google ads about homeworking and it promises that you’ll be working for about seven minutes a day.
You can be a success if you have the right business model but, if not, you’ll fall on your face.
People who are pushed into home working because they lose their job or think they will get rich quick are more likely to fall over. They set up a Facebook page and wonder why no one has turned up.
It’s better to start a business that you’re passionate about. You’re then more likely to be proactive and engage with people.

3. You don’t need to spend money on day care.

For busy parents, working from home may seem like the ideal solution – not only do you see more of your family but you also save money on day care for your children.
Right?
You will regularly, need a babysitter for your children, and hubby can help out, but you need the balance as you may need to go out for meetings.
Also, you won’t keep to normal working hours, kids at school?

4. It’s not a real job.

Perhaps the most hurtful myth about home-based working, is that it is somehow a lesser job. That it is a frivolous hobby for bored mothers or fathers, rather than a platform for fast-growth businesses, ignoring the fact that the likes of Google, FaceBook and Amazon started life as home-based start-ups.
People tell me “that it’s not a real job” a bit frustrating.
It has got a bit of a bad rap, look at the number of people who work from home. Look at what many of them go on to achieve. They are worthwhile businesses and they are contributing to the economy.

All you’re doing is moving your job to your home.

This maybe so but the biggest advantage here is no commute. If you set up your office to be efficient tidy and productive you will find you will be more aware of what needs to be done and when. (efficiency). The way communication is now, nobody cares or would even know you are not sitting on the 36th floor, or sitting in your home office looking out of your window and in my case, a green paddock with 5 horses.

6. You don’t have to worry about health and safety.

If you are wallowing in a messy, potentially dangerous home-based office, you risk more than being called a slob.
Not only is your own health and safety important if you are to keep running your business, but any staff and clients will need to be protected too, as a recent case where Telstra had to pay medical and legal costs for an injured home worker highlighted.
Ensuring that your home is a safe workplace doesn’t happen by chance or guesswork.
It requires a systematic approach to finding and fixing hazards and risks and any particular circumstances that apply to your home working base.”
I advise going through five key steps to get your OHS in good shape:

*Finding hazards that could hurt the people who either live, work or visit your home.
*Family forums that bring together all of these people on a regular basis to make sure that they are as safety conscious as you are and
undertake the safety drills that are an essential part of hazard awareness.
*Figuring out how the people in and around your home life could get hurt and working life hazards (the level of risk).
*Fixing identified problems by sorting out and installing the most effective risk controls that are reasonably practicable under your
circumstances.
*Following through on your risk controls and checking that they are working to cope when things do not go according to plan.

7th of the top 10 myths
Your home life will remain exactly the same.

Home is a nice place to relax and turn off after a long, hard day at work. Surely, if you spend all day there, you will be permanently in the comfort zone?
Firstly, map your own interests and personal priorities and then set out how the start-up is going to help you achieve your objectives.
Be honest with yourself and answer these core questions: How will this venture change our way of life? What do I really like doing, and how will it shape my family’s future?
Who can support me while I get the business up and running? Where will all this take us and what will it cost to succeed?
Then you need to set aside a fixed amount of time for your business homework, when the kids have done theirs and get partners and friends to share the burden of developing your start-up as an adjunct to your family life rather than an alternative to it.

8. Clients won’t take you seriously.

Many budding entrepreneurs fret about the impression left upon clients by their home office.
Obviously, you don’t want to hold an important meeting with a key client while you are both wedged on the sofa, trying to ignore the child that is watching cartoons on the TV.
But this doesn’t mean that it’s impossible to convey a professional demeanour to clients.
If they have to come to your house, set aside a room for meetings and ensure there aren’t any interruptions. Better still, hold the meeting at a café or at a serviced office that you can rent out by the hour.
There are other tricks to making your business appear bigger, such as adopting a 1800 telephone number, but, ultimately, your customers will primarily care about the products or service you provide them. You working from home shouldn’t be a factor.

There’s no good financial reason, other than cutting overheads.

A common rationale for working from home is the money it will save you on office space, furniture and commuting.
But don’t be fooled into thinking that there is little other financial reason to working from home other than the overheads you’ll save on.
Australia’s tax code is fairly generous for entrepreneurs with home offices, with deductions offered for factors such as electricity, cleaning supplies, depreciation of office equipment, mortgage interest, rent, rates and insurance.
Indeed, the Tax Office provides a “bonus deduction” of 50% for small businesses with qualifying assets.

And finally 10th of the top 10 myths
Being at home all day is awesome.

Office dwellers commonly think that working from home is an indulgent luxury that they’d give their right arm to experience. In reality, working from home by yourself for a long period can be quite taxing. Entrepreneurs often miss the collaboration and
interaction that comes with working alongside colleagues.
You need a staged plan that lists the people who are your keys to success. This means that you identify business leaders, distributors and potential customers who you plan to meet and greet.”
By doing this you are proactively establishing what’s new and different and can overcome that sense of being cut off by your start-up activities.
Pick up the phone, send them an email and invite their comment on what you are doing.

Summary of the top 10 myths

Home Businesses are smart businesses, and becoming more and more popular. The old fashioned bricks and mortar businesses are great, but hugely expensive in comparison. For traditional retail they are best , but for digital direct sales or similar, home business is the perfect choice. But please remember, when you are working, you are working. I have a sign on my office door saying (not in these exact words)

I have found from experience, the best thing to do when searching for information about your recently found Home Based Business opportunity is, avoid ALL chat rooms and most google search results about your discovery as they ALWAYS ALWAYS sensationalize the negative. (If you search for positive or negative about any topic, you will find it).
These rooms are mainly used to drive traffic to their site and therefore get top ranking as to drive the advertising dollar up, so they make money from mostly fiction with the click thru system.
Exactly the same with most news programs. High priced primetime advertising due to the magnetic attraction of negative news, is a perfect example. We humans are a weird bunch….

Only YOU can determine what is your idea of fact or fiction in a home based business op by doing your due diligence. Don’t let a complete stranger influence your decision.

Talk directly to the boss.
If you can’t talk with anyone, move on.
Ask questions like,

1) What are the Startup Costs compared to the potential results for this Home Based Business Opportunity?

How much are the start up costs for the home based business opportunity you’re considering? Are there ongoing costs? If so, what will they entail and how much are they?

This is especially important if you don’t have much money to invest. Some businesses have ongoing costs in maintenance, so you want to get these questions answered.
All business that are worth you time and effort require financial committment.
eg. 1 million dollars plus for a McDonalds franchise.

2) What Kind of Training and Support are Available with the Home Based Business Opportunity?

3) What are the Rules for Advertising and Promotion?

Many home business opportunities have rules regarding how and where you can advertise. In some cases you may have strict limitations, and in others you may be able to do more or less whatever you want. For example, the company names are often copyrighted and/or trademarked and therefore you are not allowed to use them in advertising without permission.
All reputable businesses have these rules to protect their integrity.

4) What is the Realistic Income Potential for this Home Based Business Opportunity?

Tip: Don’t ask what the average is because, you do not want average results.
Just remember in every business in the world, it is normally 5% of participants who really apply themselves, who get the big bucks. Do exactly what they do.

Some businesses have considerably more income potential than others and before you invest your time and money into any home based business opportunity, you should understand how much you could realistically expect to make. This means studying the compensation plan and running the numbers. Always follow the system to the letter otherwise you may make zero, while others are making a bucket load.

It’s also important to understand your breakeven point and how long it may take for you to reach the level of income that the home based business opportunity claims is possible or that you’ve set as a goal.
Make sure you make your committment years, instead of weeks like a lot of people do, and then say, “this doesn’t work”. 3 feet from gold.

5) How Long Has the Company Offering the Home Based Business Opportunity Been in Business?

A brand new company has no track record and it can therefore, be unstable. A company that has been in business for more than five years has financial stability. The company I am with is now worth $170 million.
Check if the company is in the Direct Selling Association, which requires a level ethics and standards for member companies.

6) What Products or Services are Involved with this Home Based Business Opportunity?

What are their products like? Are they high quality and worth the price? Would you buy them even if you weren’t associated?
But also remember you must be a product of the product before you can recommend it with confidence.

Is the product consumable requiring customers to reorder on a regular basis? Consumable products create more stability and regularity of income due to repeat customers. Non-consumable products can only be sold once and then you have to go out and find more customers.

7) Are There Quotas or Minimum Inventory Requirements for this Home Based Business Opportunity?

If you are required by the company to buy a large quantity of products on a regular basis then it can be difficult to maintain the business or it can be financially stressful if you need to temporarily stop working your business. The last thing you want is a basement full of unused products. While it’s nice to have a little bit of inventory, be wary of any company that asks you stock a huge amount of product. I would run away.

8) Are the Products or Services that this Home Based Business Opportunity Will Offer Affordable?

Affordable is a funny word. You ask, affordable, according to who and compared to what.
Affordability is always governed by your idea of value.
A good reputable company will always offer a try before you buy or a money back guarantee.
BUT…. make dam sure you apply yourself to the business 110% otherwise you will never know the true benefits.

Even after three “snoozes” and more than your normal dose of coffee this morning, you’re still drowsy. You’re feeling crabby, rundown, exhausted—and you can’t shake the yawns. Why are you so tired, and why can’t I have the success I deserve?

You probably didn’t get enough sleep last night and you’re not alone. Insufficient sleep is a health epidemic, and one that can have negative effects on your overall health and productivity, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Don’t be “just another” statistic. Give these 11 techniques a try instead and reap the benefits of a good night’s sleep:

1. Give yourself a bedtime.

Pick a time at night when you typically start feeling tired and go to sleep every night at that time—even on the weekends. Sticking to a daily sleep routine keeps your biological clock in order so that you’ll sleep more soundly. If you do have to change your sleep pattern, do so in small increments, like going to bed earlier or staying up later by 15 minutes.

2. Move, move, move.

Did you know regular exercise relieves insomnia? According to a study at Northwestern University’s Department of Neurobiology and Physiology, people who got aerobic exercise four times a week improved their quality of sleep—and they were less tired during the day, reported less depressive symptoms and had more vitality.

Keep in mind that while exercise can help you sleep better, you shouldn’t squeeze your workout into the hours before bedtime. Strenuous activity two or three hours before bed can raise the temperature of your body, which makes it harder for you to fall asleep.

3. Unwind.

Make time for a nightly “unwinding” ritual—like reading a book, taking a warm shower bath, preparing for the next day, listening to soothing music. Activities like these will help ease the transition between wakefulness and drowsiness, making you feel more relaxed. But be careful not to overdo it with the electronic gadgets—lights from these devices stimulate the brain, which makes it harder to unwind.

4. Smoke and drink no more.

Smokers are four times less likely to feel well rested after a night’s sleep than nonsmokers, according to a study in the Chest Journal. Why? Because of the stimulating effect of nicotine, as well as withdrawal pangs during the night. The bad habit can also lead to asthma and sleep apnea. So add “quit smoking” to your to-do list.

And while you’re at it, you should consider giving up that nightcap, too. While alcohol might help you fall asleep initially, studies have found that it reduces REM sleep and can even suppress breathing.

5. Build a cave.

Your bedroom should be cool, dark and quiet if you want to get a solid night of sleeping. The temperature should be set around 65 degrees—if room is too hot, it can interfere with your body’s natural dip in temperature throughout the night, disrupting your sleep. You also should make sure there is as little background noise and light as possible—turn off the TV, use low-wattage bulbs in your bedroom, and invest in blackout curtains to keep the room dark.

6. Nap—the right way.

Naps help restore alertness, increase productivity and can be used as a sort of mini-vacation, an escape from reality—which is why organizations like Google and The Huffington Post have places for employees to sleep on the job. While naps are nice in more ways than one, you should try to limit yours to 10-30 minutes per day, preferably in the mid-afternoon—if you nap for too long, you will throw off your sleep pattern.

7. Say no to supersizing.

Stay away from consuming large meals—especially ones that are acidic and spicy—before you hit the hay. Otherwise you’ll struggle to fall asleep because of digestion and heartburn. If you must satisfy your grumbling tummy, choose a snack that combines carbohydrates and calcium or a protein and the amino acid tryptophan to boost serotonin levels. Try a banana with a teaspoon of peanut butter, fruit with low-fat yogurt, or a piece of grain toast with low-fat cheese or turkey.

8. Make it a rule: Your bedroom is for sleeping only.

Your bedroom is where you sleep. It’s not where you watch TV, work or eat. By removing life’s distractions and dedicating the space to slumber, you’ll sleep more peacefully.

9. Sleep solo.                                                                

Dr. John Shepard, director of the Mayo Clinic Sleep Disorders Center, conducted a study in 2001 to see how pets affect the sleep of their owners. What did he find? That “53 percent considered their sleep to be disrupted to some extent every night.” Pets, and kids, aren’t usually sound sleepers. And if they’re sharing a bed with you, you may have a poor night’s sleep, too. It might be hard to say no to that face, but if you can, keep the bed to yourself.

10. Stress less.

When we’re worried, our sleep suffers. Manage your stress by meditating and relaxing before you get in bed. Write down your concerns, delegate tasks and create to-do-lists for the next day so that you can free your mind.

11. Strike a (healthy) pose.

What’s your go-to sleep position—back, side, stomach? Sleeping on your back should be your No. 1 choice because it prevents neck and back pain and reduces acid reflux. If you’re a back-sleeper, though, be sure that you have a puffy pillow so that your head and neck are properly supported. What about side-sleeping? That’s also good for overall health, but you’ll need a thick pillow to fill the space above your shoulder. And stomach sleeping is the worst because it prevents neutral spine position and puts pressure on your joints and muscles—so if you can’t help but sleep facedown, at least get a thin or no pillow at all.

So, sleeping you way to success is not a …um… naughty as it sounds. A good well rested person will think clearer, make decisions quicker, and be nicer to be around. This will dramatically effect your relationships, and we all know that relationships equals success.

I couldn’t spell entrepreneur at school

In school, we’re taught to obey the rules, to do things by the book, and if you stray away from the pack, you’re quickly pushed back into the mold the education system puts us all into. If you had and thoughts of being an entrepreneur, the herd would drag you back in. A strong minded individual would be kicking and screaming. The true spirit of an individual.

An Entrepreneur thinks differently, and frankly, everyone thinks and learns differently. Which is why a system that makes everyone think the same is killing the entrepreneurial spirit. Entrepreneurs go against the norm, and refuse to be forced into a life or way of thinking. Entrepreneurs want to create, not follow a rule book created by someone else.

Entrepreneurship Can Rarely Be Taught In Class.
Today, education is changing. While most kids in school still don’t learn about money and business through high school, university business schools are now offering entrepreneurship programs for those interested in building their own business.

Any attempt to further the cause of entrepreneurship is admirable, but being a successful entrepreneur can rarely be taught in a classroom. Entrepreneurs have to be flexible, adapt to changing circumstances quickly. They have to have spirit. They have to fight through adversity. These things cannot come from school.

Where do Entrepreneurs Get an Education?

If you’ve ever met a successful entrepreneur you probably noticed they don’t like to waste time. Their time is valuable since they are doing so many things on their own. For most entrepreneurs, learning from their own mistakes and other entrepreneurs is the way to go. This is why incubators, networking events, and mentor-ship programs are great places to start for an education in owning your own business. Not only are these great places to meet people but they are also great places for resources like funding, accounting, marketing and technology—all things that entrepreneurs need.

So, do entrepreneurs need to be “smart” to be successful? Yes… just not in the way most people think of “smart”.

Measuring emotional intelligence can be difficult because of its intangible nature. But Dr. Travis Bradberry has analyzed the data from the million-plus people that TalentSmart has tested for EQ to help identify the behaviors that are sure signs you have a high EQ. He shares them with us in this article, originally published on LinkedIn Pulse.

When emotional intelligence (EQ) first appeared to the masses, it served as the missing link in a peculiar finding: People with average IQs outperform those with the highest IQs 70 percent of the time. This anomaly threw a massive wrench into the broadly-held assumption that IQ was the sole source of success.

Decades of research now point to emotional intelligence as being the critical factor that sets star performers apart from the rest of the pack. The connection is so strong that we know 90 percent of top performers have high emotional intelligence.

Emotional intelligence is the “something” in each of us that is a bit intangible. It affects how we manage behavior, navigate social complexities and make personal decisions to achieve positive results.

Despite the significance of EQ, its intangible nature makes it very difficult to know how much you have and what you can do to improve if you’re lacking. You can always take a scientifically validated test, such as the one that comes with the Emotional Intelligence 2.0 book.

Unfortunately, quality (scientifically valid) EQ tests aren’t free. So, I’ve analyzed the data from the million-plus people that TalentSmart has tested in order to identify the behaviors that are the hallmarks of a high EQ. What follows are sure signs that you have a high EQ.

1. You have a robust emotional vocabulary.

All people experience emotions, but it is a select few who can accurately identify them as they occur. Our research shows that only 36 percent of people can do this, which is problematic because unlabeled emotions often go misunderstood, which leads to irrational choices and counterproductive actions.

People with high EQs master their emotions because they understand them, and they use an extensive vocabulary of feelings to do so. While many people might describe themselves as simply feeling “bad,” emotionally intelligent people can pinpoint whether they feel “irritable,” “frustrated,” “downtrodden,” or “anxious.” The more specific your word choice, the better insight you have into exactly how you are feeling, what caused it and what you should do about it.

2. You’re curious about people.

It doesn’t matter if they’re introverted or extroverted, emotionally intelligent people are curious about everyone around them. This curiosity is the product of empathy, one of the most significant gateways to a high EQ. The more you care about other people and what they’re going through, the more curiosity you’re going to have about them.

3. You embrace change.

Emotionally intelligent people are flexible and are constantly adapting. They know that fear of change is paralyzing and a major threat to their success and happiness. They look for change that is lurking just around the corner, and they form a plan of action should these changes occur.

4. You know your strengths and weaknesses.

Emotionally intelligent people don’t just understand emotions; they know what they’re good at and what they’re terrible at. They also know who pushes their buttons and the environments (both situations and people) that enable them to succeed. Having a high EQ means you know your strengths and you know how to lean into them and use them to your full advantage while keeping your weaknesses from holding you back.

5. You’re a good judge of character.

Much of emotional intelligence comes down to social awareness; the ability to read other people, know what they’re about, and understand what they’re going through. Over time, this skill makes you an exceptional judge of character. People are no mystery to you. You know what they’re all about and understand their motivations, even those that lie hidden beneath the surface.

6. You are difficult to offend.

If you have a firm grasp of whom you are, it’s difficult for someone to say or do something that gets your goat. Emotionally intelligent people are self-confident and open-minded, which creates a pretty thick skin. You may even poke fun at yourself or let other people make jokes about you because you are able to mentally draw the line between humor and degradation.

7. You know how to say no (to yourself and others).

Emotional intelligence means knowing how to exert self-control. You delay gratification, and you avoid impulsive action. Research conducted at the University of California, San Francisco, shows that the more difficulty that you have saying no, the more likely you are to experience stress, burnout and even depression. Saying no is indeed a major self-control challenge for many people. “No” is a powerful word that you should not be afraid to wield. When it’s time to say no, emotionally intelligent people avoid phrases such as “I don’t think I can” or “I’m not certain.” Saying no to a new commitment honors your existing commitments and gives you the opportunity to successfully fulfill them.

8. You let go of mistakes.

Emotionally intelligent people distance themselves from their mistakes, but do so without forgetting them. By keeping their mistakes at a safe distance, yet still handy enough to refer to, they are able to adapt and adjust for future success. It takes refined self-awareness to walk this tightrope between dwelling and remembering. Dwelling too long on your mistakes makes you anxious and gun shy, while forgetting about them completely makes you bound to repeat them. The key to balance lies in your ability to transform failures into nuggets of improvement. This creates the tendency to get right back up every time you fall down.

9. You give and expect nothing in return.

When someone gives you something spontaneously, without expecting anything in return, this leaves a powerful impression. For example, you might have an interesting conversation with someone about a book, and when you see them again a month later, you show up with the book in hand. Emotionally intelligent people build strong relationships because they are constantly thinking about others.

10. You don’t hold grudges.

The negative emotions that come with holding onto a grudge are actually a stress response. Just thinking about the event sends your body into fight-or-flight mode, a survival mechanism that forces you to stand up and fight or run for the hills when faced with a threat. When the threat is imminent, this reaction is essential to your survival, but when the threat is ancient history, holding onto that stress wreaks havoc on your body and can have devastating health consequences over time. In fact, researchers at Emory University have shown that holding onto stress contributes to high blood pressure and heart disease. Holding onto a grudge means you’re holding onto stress, and emotionally intelligent people know to avoid this at all costs. Letting go of a grudge not only makes you feel better now but can also improve your health.

11. You neutralize toxic people.

Dealing with difficult people is frustrating and exhausting for most. High EQ individuals control their interactions with toxic people by keeping their feelings in check. When they need to confront a toxic person, they approach the situation rationally. They identify their own emotions and don’t allow anger or frustration to fuel the chaos. They also consider the difficult person’s standpoint and are able to find solutions and common ground. Even when things completely derail, emotionally intelligent people are able to take the toxic person with a grain of salt to avoid letting him or her bring them down.

12. You don’t seek perfection.

Emotionally intelligent people won’t set perfection as their target because they know that it doesn’t exist. Human beings, by our very nature, are fallible. When perfection is your goal, you’re always left with a nagging sense of failure that makes you want to give up or reduce your effort. You end up spending your time lamenting what you failed to accomplish and what you should have done differently instead of moving forward, excited about what you’ve achieved and what you will accomplish in the future.

13. You appreciate what you have.

Taking time to contemplate what you’re grateful for isn’t merely the right thing to do; it also improves your mood because it reduces the stress hormone cortisol by 23 percent. Research conducted at the University of California, Davis, found that people who worked daily to cultivate an attitude of gratitude experienced improved mood, energy and physical well-being. It’s likely that lower levels of cortisol played a major role in this.

14. You disconnect.

Taking regular time off the grid is a sign of a high EQ because it helps you to keep your stress under control and to live in the moment. When you make yourself available to your work 24/7, you expose yourself to a constant barrage of stressors. Forcing yourself offline and even—gulp!—turning off your phone gives your body and mind a break. Studies have shown that something as simple as an email break can lower stress levels. Technology enables constant communication and the expectation that you should be available 24/7. It is extremely difficult to enjoy a stress-free moment outside of work when an email that will change your train of thought and get you thinking (read: stressing) about work can drop onto your phone at any moment.

15. You limit your caffeine intake.

Drinking excessive amounts of caffeine triggers the release of adrenaline, and adrenaline is the source of the fight-or-flight response. The fight-or-flight mechanism sidesteps rational thinking in favor of a faster response to ensure survival. This is great when a bear is chasing you, but not so great when you’re responding to a curt email. When caffeine puts your brain and body into this hyper-aroused state of stress, your emotions overrun your behavior. Caffeine’s long half-life ensures you stay this way as it takes its sweet time working its way out of your body. High-EQ individuals know that caffeine is trouble, and they don’t let it get the better of them.

16. You get enough sleep.

It’s difficult to overstate the importance of sleep to increasing your emotional intelligence and managing your stress levels. When you sleep, your brain literally recharges, shuffling through the day’s memories and storing or discarding them (which causes dreams) so that you wake up alert and clearheaded. High-EQ individuals know that their self-control, attention, and memory are all reduced when they don’t get enough—or the right kind—of sleep. So, they make sleep a top priority.

17. You stop negative self-talk in its tracks.

The more you ruminate on negative thoughts, the more power you give them. Most of our negative thoughts are just that—thoughts, not facts. When it feels like something always or never happens, this is just your brain’s natural tendency to perceive threats (inflating the frequency or severity of an event). Emotionally intelligent people separate their thoughts from the facts in order to escape the cycle of negativity and move toward a positive, new outlook.

18. You won’t let anyone limit your joy.

When your sense of pleasure and satisfaction are derived from the opinions of other people, you are no longer the master of your own happiness. When emotionally intelligent people feel good about something that they’ve done, they won’t let anyone’s opinions or snide remarks take that away from them. While it’s impossible to turn off your reactions to what others think of you, you don’t have to compare yourself to others, and you can always take people’s opinions with a grain of salt. That way, no matter what other people are thinking or doing, your self-worth comes from within.
